Frequently Asked Questions

Botox FAQs

What is Botox?

  • The active ingredient is OnabotulinumtoxinA. It is derived from a bacterium found in nature, but the version used in a clinic is a vacuum-dried, sterile powder that is reconstituted with saline. It is used in extremely small, localized doses.

How does Botox work?

  • Botox acts as a communication blocker between your nerves and your muscles. Normally, your nerves release a chemical signal that tells your muscles to contract; when you squint or frown, this contraction folds the skin and creates a wrinkle. Botox works by temporarily blocking that signal, which keeps the muscle in a relaxed state. Without the constant "scrunching" movement, the skin on top has a chance to smooth out, causing existing lines to soften and preventing new ones from forming.

What are the side effects of Botox?

  • The most common side effects are very minor, such as slight redness or small "bee sting" bumps at the injection site that disappear within 20 minutes. Some people experience a mild headache the evening of their treatment.

How many units of Botox do I need?

  • This answer can vary for each person as some require more units than others. It also depends on if there are specific areas being treated vs the full face. Making a consultation appointment is the first step in creating a personalized treatment plan for obtaining natural-looking results.

When will I see results after receiving Botox?

  • You will start to notice the effects of Botox within 3-7 days of receiving it, but the full effects will be noticeable after 2 weeks of receiving it.

Is there any downtime to receiving Botox?

  • There is no downtime after receiving Botox. It is highly recommended to stay out of the sun, away from saunas/hot tubs, exercise, alcohol and NSAIDs for 24-48 hours after treatment.

What happens when the Botox wears off?

  • Your muscles simply regain their strength, and the lines will slowly reappear exactly as they were before. Botox does not make wrinkles worse once it wears off. In fact, because the skin has had a 3-month break from folding, the wrinkles are often less deep than they would have been otherwise.

Can you treat TMJ with Botox?

  • Yes, if you are prone to grinding or clenching your teeth, Botox can be injected into the Masseter muscle to relax the muscles and improve lower face definition by reducing the bulk that causes sagging jowls.

How often do you have to get Botox?

  • Botox lasts about 3-4 months, certain areas like a Lip flip last about 8-12 weeks, whereas the Masseter (jaw) can last up to 6 months.

At what age should I start getting Botox?

  • There is no magic number to start Botox as it depends on each individual's genetics, sun exposure, and how expressive their face is.
  • A good rule of thumb to determine if you're ready is the Paper Test: Imagine your skin is a piece of paper. If you fold it and let go, and the paper is still smooth, you don’t need Botox yet. If you fold it and let go, and a tiny line remains in the "paper," that is the ideal time to start treatment to keep that crease from becoming a permanent tear.

Do Botox injections hurt?

  • Most people describe the feeling as a quick, tiny pinch or a mosquito bite. In certain areas, like the forehead or between the brows, you might hear a tiny crunch or pop sound. This is completely normal! It’s simply the needle passing through the fibrous tissue just above the muscle. It sounds much louder to you than it actually is because it’s happening right against your forehead.  You might feel a slight pressure or cold sensation as the liquid enters the area, but this only last for a se
